Brief Chronicles to be Distributed in Germany

Germany may be the country in which the case for the Earl of Oxford’s authorship of the Shakespearean is most rapidly becoming assimilated in popular consciousness. The Neue Shake-speare Gesellschaft (New Shake-speare Society) — was set up on March 27, 2010 in Hamburg, by a group of editors, contributors and readers of the Neues Shake-speare Journal,which has been published since 1997. The Society’s objective is to draw the public’s attention to Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford, as the author of Shakespeare’s works and to disseminate research that demonstrates his claim to the authorship.

To this end the new society has acquired 300 copies of the printed edition of the first issue of Brief Chronicles and will be distributing them throughout the German literary community during the 2010-2011 academic year.

Brief Chronicles Mailed to 1,000 MLA Professors of Shakespeare

The publication is a new peer reviewed inter-disciplinary journal of authorship studies.

"To some, the Shakespeare Authorship Question is no more than a marvelous whodunit," said Roger Stritmatter, Associate Professor of Humanities and Literature at Coppin State University and General Editor of Brief Chronicles. "For scholars, however, it represents the foremost challenge and opportunity in a modern humanities curriculum. It tests the Academy's capacity for self-correction on a global scale in response to evidence produced primarily by independent scholars."

The April mailing to MLA members coincides with publication of Contested Will, the new book by Professor James Shapiro of Columbia University, which examines the Shakespeare authorship issue in depth. A review of that book by Warren Hope, PhD, a Board member of Brief Chronicles, appears at The Shakespeare Fellowship.

"Professor Shapiro's book is evidence of the increasing relevance of the authorship issue to scholars," stated Stritmatter. "We believe our journal will become the focal point of research on the authorship debate because it resolves two outstanding issues in Academia's approach to Shakespeare.

"One is its inter-disciplinary design," said Stritmatter. "Brief Chronicles has an Editorial Board comprised of scholars with terminal degrees in Economics, English, Law, Medicine, Comparative Literature, and Theater from universities in the US, Canada and Great Britain. This is in contrast to traditional scholarship, in which journals seek to generate new discoveries within the boundaries of particular disciplines. The problem is an inter-disciplinary one, and only an inter-disciplinary approach is capable of solving it," he emphasized.

"The active collaboration of linguists, historians, theatrer professionals, and legal scholars, as well as those trained in literary studies, is not only welcome but necessary."

important books, articles, book reviews, dissertations, theatrical

BC Board Member Publishes in Leading Psychoanalytical Journal

Abstract: There is now abundant evidence that Freud was correct in believing Edward de Vere (1550-1604) wrote under the pseudonym "William Shakespeare." One common reaction is "What difference does it make?" I address that question by examining many significant connections between de Vere's life and The Tempest. Such studies promise to bring our understanding of Shakespeare's works back into line with our usual psychoanalytic approach to literature, which examines how a great writer's imagination weaves a new creation out of the threads of his or her life experiences. One source of the intense controversy about de Vere's authorship is our idealization of the traditional author, about whom we know so little that, as Freud noted, we can imagine his personality was as fine as his works.

Brief Chronicles welcomes new editorial board members, Part II

Three of the new board members -- Dr. Geoffrey Hodgson, Dr. Felicia Londré, and Dr. Ren Draya -- were already welcomed in our 12-13 site announcement.

Three additional new board members welcomed for the first time in the release bring our total board members to twelve.

These are

Harvard historian and methodologist Donald Ostrowski, PhD.
Independent researcher Mike Hyde, PhD in literary studies from Tufts University.
Carole Chaski, PhD in linguistics from Brown University.

Dr. Chaski is the President of ALIAS Technology, LLC, Executive Director of the Institute for Linguistic Evidence, the first non-profit research organization devoted to forensic analysis of linguistic evidence, and a nationally recognized expert on Daubert standards.

Brief Chronicles welcomes new editorial board members

Dr. Hodgson is a Research Professor in Economics at the University of Hertfordshire in England. A member of the Academy of Social Sciences in the UK, he is the author or over 12 books and over 100 articles in academic journals.

Dr. Londre is the Curators’ Professor of Theatre at the University of Missouri Kansas City. A theatre historian specializing in American, French, and Russian theatre, as well as Shakespeare, Dr. Londré for 22 years (1978-2000) served as dramaturg for Missouri Repertory Theatre.

Dr. Draya is a Professor of British & American Literature at Blackburn College, where she teaches Shakespeare, Craft of Writing, and Twentieth-Century British Literature, among other courses. Dr. Draya has published extensively on the Oxfordian theory of authorship and is the editor (with Sylvan Barnet, Morton Berman, and William Buto) of Types of Drama (Addison-Wesley, 1997).

Now that our first issue has been published, Brief Chronicles is actively soliciting new material for our second issue. If you like what you read in the inaugural issue -- as many people have told us they do -- please consider submitting an article to the 2010 issue.

From now on, we will be accepting submissions only through the OJS online submission process. Although this involves a certain learning curve for contributors, in the long run it will save us all a great deal of trouble and make for a more efficient publication.
